PHYSIOTHERAPY
Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that is primarily concerned with remediation of impairments and disabilities and the promotion of mobility, functional ability, quality of life and movement potential through examination, evaluation, diagnosis and physical intervention. Physical therapists can help people at any stage of life, when movement and function are threatened by ageing, injury, diseases, disorders, conditions or environmental factors. Physical therapists help people maximize their quality of life, looking at physical, psychological, emotional and social wellbeing.
Physiotherapists work in the health spheres of promotion, prevention, treatment/intervention, habilitation and rehabilitation in several domains like musculoskeletal problems (neck pain, back pain, arthritis, work-related conditions etc), neurological conditions (stroke, spinal cord injury, peripheral nerve injury, myopathies etc), pediatric cases (cerebral palsy, mental retardation, Downs syndrome, learning disabilities, dystrophies etc.), cardio-respiratory & vascular diseases (asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, pneumothorax, hemothorax, varicose veins, hypertension etc.), pre-operative and post-operative cases (knee replacement, hip replacement, cardiac surgeries, ICU post-operative care etc), sports injuries, womens health, geriatrics etc. Physical therapists can practice independently and also within interdisciplinary rehabilitation/habilitation programmes in a wide variety of settings that may include primary health care centers, education & research centers, fitness clubs, health clubs, hospitals, senior citizen centers, workplaces/companies, national and international sports teams like cricket, hockey, football, archery, shooting, athletic events, etc.
The Government of Indias national policy on the prevention of disability also recognizes the physiotherapist as core member of the team involved in the prevention and management of locomotor disability. Honorable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi in his message at the 60th National Conference of the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) 2023 and on the occasion of World Physiotherapy Day 2025 acknowledged the importance of physiotherapists as providers of solace, symbol of hope, resilience and recovery. He extended his appreciation to physiotherapists across the country for their vital role in enhancing the well-being and dignity of people. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised the essential work of physiotherapists during the COVID-19 pandemic during the opening session of the World Physiotherapy Congress in April 2021. He highlighted the critical role physiotherapists played in helping patients recover from COVID-19 and manage the long-term impacts of the virus.
About The Department
The Department of Physiotherapy at Punjabi University, Patiala came to independent existence in 2008. Since then the Department has emerged as an institute of national and international repute by being pioneer in physiotherapy education in India. Department of Physiotherapy runs two regular programmes i.e., Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) and Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) in four specializations i.e., Musculoskeletal sciences, Neurosciences, Cardio-pulmonary sciences and Sports sciences. The Department is among one of those few universities of India that offer Ph.D. programme in physiotherapy.

The Department has highly qualified and most experienced physiotherapy professionals in the country in its faculty. Books authored by the faculties of the department have become the standard text book of various universities. The staff and students of the department are actively engaged in the research work in all areas of physiotherapy and their research output is being published in the reputed national and international journals. By virtue of their research contributions, all the faculty members have earned recognition in their respective areas of specialization. They are invited all over the country and abroad as well to chair scientific sessions, as resource persons and delivering lectures.

Facilities
OUT PATIENT DEPARTMENT (OPDs)
In order to meet the requirement of clinical material for teaching and research, the Department runs three OPDs. The main OPD (General & Neurological) is located in the Health Centre of University where more than 100 patients receive physiotherapy services every day. The extension center i.e., Geriatric Physiotherapy Clinic at Model Town, Patiala provides specialized care to elderly population of the city. Sports physiotherapy clinic caters to the specific need of sports persons of the university. In all these OPDs, the services are provided by the highly qualified Clinical Physiotherapists. These OPDs are equipped with ultra-modern equipment like SWD, MWD unit, Combo-therapy, Interferential Therapy unit, Functional Muscle Stimulator, Therapeutic Ultrasound, Traction, Infrared, Moist Heat, Whirlpool, Laser Therapy unit, Cryotherapy etc.

- Research Lab - The research lab of the department is equipped with state of the art research equipment such as Electromyography (EMG), Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV), Electro-cardiography (ECG), Computerized Spirometry, Bone Mineral Density Evaluation, Foot pressure assessment, Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator with MEP Functional Neuro Mapping (rTMS) System, Body Composition analyzer, Physical fitness evaluation equipment, Wireless EMG system and Force Platform, EEG etc.
- Gait Lab - The Department developed 3D Gait Analyzer lab with sophisticated equipment like force platforms (multiaxial) for kinetic and ground reaction force Analysis, video cameras, movement inertial sensor with the funds provided to the Department by DST-FIST. 4D spine posture assessment equipment has also been installed in the lab to provide detailed posture analysis of spine.
